Reminds me of when I was a kid
|
| Review Date: June 16, 2007 |
| Reviewer: EJ, Indiana |
| This ice cream maker reminds me of when I was a kid. Can be used with hand crank or electric. Have only used it once, but the consistency was one of the best ice creams I've ever made. Be sure to follow the directions, crush your ice up well so it will blend smoothly.. I'm very happy with this, especially when I see how much other freezers cost. |
Cheap plastic gears.
|
| Review Date: June 3, 2007 |
| Reviewer: Gary Guiles, |
| I used this ice cream maker 3 times. Each time it was very hard to engage the shaft with the gears to make it turn. It worked better with the hand crank than the electric motor. The third time, the electric motor would not engage at all. The hand crank engaged but, once the ice cream was soft, the cheap plastic gears would just slip. A tip: If you get it to work, the owners manual says to add water to your ice/salt mixture. However, it freezes much better without the extra water. |
Buy it from Target.
|
| Review Date: June 20, 2007 |
| Reviewer: Dissatisfied Customer, |
I ordered this one because the description specifically says "stainless steel canister". Guess what... IT ISN'T! It's aluminum. This is the same item you can order through Amazon from Target for $20 less. Here's the link (if it doesn't work, just search Amazon for "aroma ice cream maker" and it's the first one listed, $49.99): Aroma 4-qt. Traditional Ice Cream Maker.
Now I get to return it, and "Unbeatable"'s return process looks like a whole bundle of fun. |

Product Description |
| While this wooden ice cream maker looks old-fashioned, it's actually electric, taking the arm work out of the whole process. In just 20 to 40 minutes, the maker produces up to five quarts (approximately 40 servings) of ice cream, sorbet, or frozen yogurt. The high-torque motor shuts off automatically when freezing is complete. All that's required is rock salt, ice, and the desired mixture of any flavor (a recipe booklet is included). The Rival ice cream maker consists of the motor unit, a 10-by-11-1/2-inch wooden bucket, a metal ice cream can with plastic lid, a cork stopper for the hole in the lid, and a plastic dasher with a metal shaft. A latch system secures the motor unit to the bucket, and a 45-inch cord allows good reach to a power outlet. To make good old vanilla ice cream, spiced cider sorbet, frozen strawberry yogurt, and many other tasty treats, the mixture is poured into the metal can, the dasher inserted, lid placed on, and motor unit engaged with the dasher shaft. The dasher does not turn during the freezing process; rather, the can turns around the dasher. Layers of ice and rock salt inside the wooden bucket around the can keep the temperature low enough to freeze the mixture. In case of leakage through the wooden bucket, it's a good idea to have newspaper or a plastic tub underneath. To harden ice cream, the dasher is removed after churning is complete, the cork stopper inserted into the lid, and ice and rock salt are packed over the entire can for a couple hours. All the parts except the motor unit should be washed and dried by hand. Rival covers the ice cream maker with a one-year warranty. --Ann Bieri |

Great machine for the price!
|
| Review Date: April 30, 2002 |
| Reviewer: Chistopher Dodge, Utah, USA |
| I have made probably 30 batches of ice cream since I bought this machine about one and a half years ago. It makes a batch in about 20 minutes and, if you follow the directions, (which are easy), you get perfect ice cream every time! It comes with a recipe book too. I would highly recommend making the vanilla ice cream and adding two very ripe bananas and two ripe mangos. You won't be disappointed! Good quality all around! |
THE BEST
|
| Review Date: July 7, 2003 |
| Reviewer: , |
| I have been using this machine for over 2 years now and have NEVER had any problems with it. I have used all types of recipes and they have all turned out perfectly. To those worrying about the "water" portion, SKIP IT! Completely unnecessary. The only reason it says to soak the wooden bucket in water is so that the wood will swell and keep water/ice/salt mixture from seeping through the wooden slats. I don't soak mine and nothing has ever seeped through the wood! |

It was not the redwood style I had hoped for, but the wood is bonded securely together and the motor has plenty of strength. It shuts off when done as advertised.
An excellent product for the money!!

I would never purchase any other ice cream maker - hopefully Rival will continue with this model for many years. |

Rival 8550-X Electric Ice Cream Maker
|
| Review Date: July 4, 2006 |
| Reviewer: Bolivar Shagnasty, Kokomo, IN USA |
| This product does an excellent job of making home made ice cream provided you use a recipe that will freeze up well. We tend to put more of the cream products in (whipping and half & half) to give it more body, so it takes longer for it to freeze. But, with liberal use of salt prior to the actual "cranking", it will freeze up quite nicely. Good product! |
Great Ice Cream Maker
|
| Review Date: July 19, 2006 |
| Reviewer: MJS, IL |
| I've used my Ice Cream Maker twice now and it has worked great. I used my own recipe and the ice cream was a prefect texture when the motor shut off. My bucket did not leak. My only complaint is that there is not much room between the container and the bucket, therefore you must use small pieces of ice. The ice cubes that I made in trays were to big to use. I was also surprised to see in the instructions that it was for indoor use only???? Overall, I am very satisfied with my new ice cream maker. |
Lost a few pieces - anyone selling parts?
|
| Review Date: March 16, 2008 |
| Reviewer: Tina Burns, Colorado Springs, USA |
| Had the machine for a few years now. Makes good ice-cream, some recipes work better than others. Make sure you soak the bucket as directed to swell the seams and prevent leakage! Unable to use now that I have lost the plastic cover, dasher, and cork stopper (the latter two required for the churn shaft to engage the motor). Unable to find replacement parts anywhere - Anyone have parts for this 8550-X model they'd like to sell? |

So far, so good!
|
| Review Date: July 14, 2009 |
| Reviewer: Discerning Mom, Boston, MA |
| I've only used this once, to make plain vanilla ice cream (following the recipe in the manual), and the ice cream was excellent. Like other machines out there, it is a bit deceiving to think you can have fresh ice cream made in 30 minutes; the reality is the inside container must be frozen for hours before-hand, and many recipes require that the mix be refrigerated for several hours before being made. It is also a fairly loud machine while in use, so I won't be using it when my children are sleeping. The end result, however, is very good. |
Looks great on a counter, works well
|
| Review Date: January 17, 2010 |
| Reviewer: Steven M. Palmer, |
Pros:
Excellent appearance, one of the few appliances I have out on my counter, get compliments/questions frequently.
Works well (makes a great cinnamon chocolate ice cream!)
Great warranty
Very durable ice bowl
Cons:
Even with a solid freeze of the bowl you'll need to put the ice cream in the freezer for an hour or two afterwards. Just too soft for more than a little taste.
Slightly cheap inner ice cream mixer apparatus (plastic on plastic gears/blades)
Any heavy mixings added towards end still fall to bottom due to soft consistency and poor stirring |

Product Description |
| For a century and a half, since a woman in New York invented the hand-crank freezer, making ice cream has been an American family value. Mom blended the ice cream mixture; Dad filled the maker's wooden tub with ice and rock salt to achieve the below-freezing temperature needed to produce smooth confections; kids clamored to turn the crank; and everyone happily consumed big bowls of ice cream as a reward. This family-bonding activity remains as vibrant today as it was through a century-and-a-half of "progress." With various ice-cream, frozen-yogurt, and sherbet recipes included, this old-fashioned ice-cream maker maintains the tradition. Only the use of modern stainless steel for the freezer can and dasher and the electric motor distinguish this rugged maker from the one earlier generations enjoyed. And years from now it will still be used, knitting together a family's history. The ice-cream maker measures 11-1/2 by 11-1/2 by 21 inches and carries a five-year limited warranty. A bonus start kit comes included, which provides a 5-pound bag of rock salt, one vanilla ice-cream mix, and one chocolate ice-cream mix. --Fred Brack |
